Osteopathy:
What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathic medicine is a diagnostic and therapeutic system based on the premise that the primary role of the physician is to facilitate the body's inherent ability to heal itself. Osteopathic principles are grounded in the theory that biological systems (such as the human body) are naturally harmonious and whole; not a collection of separate parts. This understanding is applied to the treatment and healing of the entire person, rather than responding only to their symptoms in a crisis-oriented, one-spot approach.

Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. (1828-1917)

The founder of Osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., was known as a medical maverick. Disheartened over the orthodox practices of his time, and particularly shocked at the mutilating surgeries he witnessed during his volunteer work as an army surgeon, he set out to discover a better way to treat disease. But it was the 1864 meningitis epidemic, claiming the life of three of his own children, that moved him to "fully realize the inefficacy of drugs... (and the) gross ignorance on the part of the medical profession". Steeled with determination, the following ten years of his life were spent delving into medical books and experimenting with the human anatomy. His work produced three basic principles: the body is capable of making its own remedies, health depends on the structural integrity of the muscle skeletal system and, a perverted structure causes disease. He also promoted sanitation and hygiene, and spoke strongly of the hazards of toxic drugs.

The Stillpoint Center for the Healing Arts

The osteopathic practitioner on staff is Dr. Greg Blaney. With over 30 years of practice in holistic medicine, Dr. Blaney offers a wealth of knowledge and experience. He is a renowned practitioner of osteopathy, neural therapy, acupuncture and complex homeopathy, and he draws upon his medical training to integrate an unusual and highly effective alternative healing practice. His studies in various psychological approaches adds depth and humility to his appreciation of the human processes of healing. He has facilitated numerous workshops and intensive retreats throughout North America and Europe, and has co-developed large community based wellness programs in various communities.

Included in the conditions that have been shown to respond well to Dr. Blaney's osteopathic work:

• acute, sub-acute and chronic muscle skeletal disorders and pain
• the "itis's" arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, etc.
• back pain, headaches
• prenatal and postnatal (child and mother) muscle skeletal complications and dysfunctions
• chronic fatigue syndrome
• post concussion syndrome
• facial pain, TMJ dysfunction
• motor vehicle accident injuries
• fibromyalgia

What therapies do we use?

Biomechanical Medicine

Osteopathic Manual Therapy

Osteopathic medicine is a diagnostic and therapeutic system based on the premise that the primary role of the physician is to facilitate the body's inherent ability to heal itself. Osteopathic manual therapy uses hand palpation to locate and release physical restrictions in a non-traumatic manner. Because the muscle skeletal system functions as a whole and integrated unit, the entire body is diagnosed and treated accordingly. As the system frees up, toxins which have been stored in the tissue are released. This can be associated with symptoms, including a mild inflammation. Viewed as a positive response, it is important not to suppress these symptoms with medications such as anti-inflammatories. A preferable option is the use of homeopathic remedies such as Traumeel, Lymphomyosot, Lymphdiaril, and Wobenzyme — a digestive enzyme that aids detoxification.

Injection Therapy

Injection of short acting local anesthetics such as 1% Lidocaine or Procaine into trigger points, scars, and acupuncture points, helps restore the regulation ability of the autonomic nervous system. Trigger points are localized areas of spasms in the muscles that can cause local and referred pain, chronically tight muscles and weakness. Besides pain, they adversely affect joint mobility, thus perpetuating structural blocks. With needling, one can expect some discomfort from the needle penetration, and a transient sharp pain when injecting scars or acupuncture areas. With trigger point injection, one will feel a twitch response as the trigger point is needled, along with either a brief pain referral, a body jerk, or a deep ache. The injected areas will often feel achy and tight afterwards. This lessens with moist heat, gentle stretching, and rest. On occasion, there can be bruising.

Homeopathic Remedies

Often included in the injections and taken orally, these complex homeopathic remedies support the detoxification process and aid in recovery by supporting organ function, activating the immune system, improving the utilization of nutrients by the body, and providing symptom relief without suppression.

Education

The more one is educated in the activities of the healing process, the greater the benefits from associated therapy. The Stillpoint Center for the Healing Arts offers in-depth information in the form of publications, lectures, seminars, weekly classes as well as private consultations. Besides the educational material available for reading in the waiting area, we recommend 'Into the Body' by Michelle Benjamin with G. Blaney M.D. A valuable reference, it is based on the Osteopathic Field of Awareness approach. A variety of seminars and workshops are available including tutorials for the professional therapist.
