Osteopathy:
What is a typical treatment plan?

The following is the basis of the process recovery. For more information and a further appreciation of this process please see our publication, 'Into the Body', by Michelle Benjamin.

A trial of therapy

First, it is very helpful to understand that no matter where you go, no matter who you see, every therapy is a trial of therapy. No one can tell for sure what will happen as an individual receives therapy; whether the therapy be physical, nutritional, or psychological.

What is also very important to understand is that sometimes 'success' in healing doesn't always mean an immediate relief of symptoms. Positive change can evoke and sometimes even intensify symptoms. Beginning a new exercise program or quitting the coffee — both of these positive changes can evoke uncomfortable symptoms. With new exercise, you can expect stiffness and soreness. And, if you've been a coffee drinker and you suddenly stop, you can expect symptoms such as irritability, fatigue and headaches.

Following this principle, as you enter into a treatment plan at the Stillpoint Center of the Healing Arts, you will be guided through three phases. They are exploratory in nature, and they are based on the educated guess of people highly trained in Osteopathy — a field that has been documented to have effectively helped millions of people.

phase one

Assessment — The initial appointment will be 1/2 hour long and involve an extensive gathering of information with regard to your history of accidents, injuries and overall health care. As well, your muscle skeletal system will be assessed through palpation of hands. We do not use x-rays but instead investigate the function of the structure with an emphasis on normal function, or range of movement of all of the joints and soft tissue. This information supports the accurate interpretation of your needs and goals.

Trial of therapy — A trial of therapy typically involves three osteopathic treatments scheduled between seven and ten days apart. This spacing of the treatment allows the body to adapt to the physical changes incurred through treatment. It also supports the unmasking process — a process whereby underlying restrictions to normal movement become more apparent. Attention to this unmasking process is a method used in osteopathic manual therapy to follow the inherent wisdom of an individual's physical messages.

Please note
If you have had significant trauma such as with automobile accidents, it may mean you will need more than three assessment treatments to fully unveil your underlying perpetuating factors — although, this is not always the case.

phase two

Treatment — During this phase you will receive a series of osteopathic treatments scheduled between seven and ten days apart. During this time your body will go through many changes, some of which may provide significant relief and some may evoke an unmasking of symptoms caused by the positive change of having your structure move more efficiently. These symptoms can include stiffness and soreness as the muscles adapt to different movement patterns. As well they may include a detoxification response as improved circulation supports your body's need to cleanse.

It is helpful to remember that because osteopathic treatment is gentle and highly sophisticated there is no possibility of doing damage. In other words, Osteopathic Manual Therapy will help, or, nothing much will happen — you will not be left worse off. As mentioned, you may however, go through a period of time where you will be more symptomatic. Even so, there are many things you can do to relieve these symptoms and all of this information will be provided through our health care consultants.

phase three

Integration phase — It is important that you not become dependent upon the therapy. To help facilitate this, as well as to support you to be more able to help yourself, the phase three or integration phase is aimed at education. During this phase of the healing process you will be individually assessed in terms of your physical capabilities and lifestyle goals. Osteopathic Field of Awareness classes, lectures, workshops and one-on-one consultations will be suggested to help you understand and apply the basics needed for an integrated recovery.

The basics

• the ability to stretch effectively and safely and thus increase and then maintain flexibility
• the ability to strengthen effectively and safely and thus increase and then maintain the level of strength needed to meet your lifestyle
• the ability to attend to subtle messages that guide perpetuating problematic attitudes
• and finally, the ability to take the above body-knowledge into other arenas of experience, i.e.. yoga classes, fitness classes, athletic activities — with greater effectiveness and safety.

In closing

Remember, should you decide to invest in your self care at The Stillpoint Center of the Healing Arts, you will be embarking on a journey of change. The people at the center are well versed in the Osteopathic Field of Awareness and the details of day-to-day care needed to ease your way.
