Welcome to The Stillpoint Project
...dedicated to the exploration, mastery, and promotion of the healing arts

Introduction (continued)

What We Can Do

Dr. Dossey proposes that we, as a world community, begin to invite these brave individuals to the inside of the circle and, like the Emperor Penguin and their flock, help them survive. He asks that we be aware of this problem and actively look for ways in which to be supportive. This may involve as little as covering the phones to allow such a person a longer lunch break, or as much as going to a superior or petitioning a politician with praises of their efforts and beliefs.

The Stillpoint Project, dedicated to the exploration, mastery, and promotion of the healing arts, gives birth to our expression of this important vision.

The Big Plan

Ultimately, we plan a world wide symposium whereby forward thinkers from all disciplines may meet, compare notes, and "get warm". In the mean time, we are presenting educational seminars and publications that help lay out the banquet of material for the increased awareness of the general public.

At present the Stillpoint Project acts as an umbrella to two functioning organizations - both dedicated to the further exploration of the Osteopathic model:

1) The Stillpoint Center for the Healing Arts

With an educational focus and an interest in ecological welfare, the Stillpoint Center for the healing arts is dedicated to the exploration, mastery and promotion of healing modalities, both ancient and modern. Our philosophy is Osteopathic.

2) >itsforthebirds.net - a non-profit organization promoting awareness, rescue, rehabilitation and sanctuary for companion parrots.

Why the name Stillpoint?

Three reasons:

Stillpoint* - a namesake meaning

Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917)
The founder of Osteopathy

Twenty one million people died in the flu epidemic of 1917-18. It is recorded in literature that while American hospitals reported a 30 to 40 percent mortality rate, a relatively unknown medical maverick of the time was saving lives. Dr. Andrew Taylor Still practiced his brand of medicine during that epidemic and lost less than one percent of his patients.

Disheartened over the orthodox practices of his time and particularly shocked at the mutilating surgeries he witnessed during his volunteer work as an army surgeon, Dr. Still set out to discover a better way to treat disease. But it was the 1864 meningitis epidemic, claiming the life of three of his own children that moved him to "fully realize the inefficacy of drugs... (and the) gross ignorance on the part of the medical profession".

Steeled with determination the following ten years of his life were spent delving into medical books and experimenting with the human anatomy.

This work produced three basic principles:

• The body is capable of making its own remedies
• Health depends on structural integrity, and
• A malfunctioning physical structure causes disease

He also promoted sanitation and hygiene and spoke strongly of the hazards of toxic drugs.

Ultimately however, it was his "magic" manual manipulation that produced the most renowned results and Dr. Still came to regard himself as a mechanic of the living body. With his discoveries a new medical science was born.

Osteopathy

A remarkable healing art, Osteopathy is based on the fact that the body functions as one harmonious system and not as a collection of separate parts. The principles are grounded in the theory that the body is capable of making its own remedies against disease when it has normal movement, a favorable environment, and adequate nutrition. The premise of this understanding is applied to the treatment and healing of the entire person rather than responding only to their symptoms in a crisis-oriented, one-spot approach.

Osteopathy is now defined as a comprehensive system of diagnosis and therapy based on the interrelationship of anatomy and physiology for the study, prevention and treatment of disease.

Stillpoint - a physical meaning

The understanding of prana, breath, life force energy and vitality has been around for thousands of years. These concepts describe the body's movement of energetic information and is identified as acupuncture meridians, chakras and the aura or energy field. The craniosacral rhythm is a vital component of these systems. It is the synchronized movement of the skull and the tailbone; cranial, sacral respectively. This movement is influenced by the cerebrospinal fluid of the nervous system.

A "stillpoint" then, is a pause in this movement. It can occur naturally or be purposefully induced for therapeutic benefit. Inducing a temporary stillpoint in the craniosacral rhythm provides an opportunity for the being to reorganize itself. It encourages the body's innate self-correcting mechanism.

A stillpoint for the world community, is our prayer.

Stillpoint* - a spiritual meaning, eloquently symbolized in the image of the dancing Hindu deity, Shiva.

"Fear not!" states the right hand gesture of Shiva as he dances before his devotee. "Fear not, for all rests well in God". A second extended right hand holds a drum, the beat of which is the beat of time — time being a principle of creation.

A left hand of Shiva is held in a position symbolizing an elephant. The elephant is the "breaker of the way through the jungle of the world". — the Divine Guide.

The right foot is planted on the back of a dwarf — the demon whose name is "non-knowing". It signifies the passage of souls from God into matter.

The left foot, to which the elephant-hand gesture is pointing, is lifted, showing the release of the soul and the reason for the assurance — "Fear not".

"The forms that come and go — and of which your body is but one — are the flashes of my dancing limbs", exclaims Shiva. "Know Me as I am in everything. Of what then, shall you be afraid?" In the midst of the dynamism of creation and destruction which is symbolized by rocking arms and the rhythm of the slowly stamping right heel, the Deity's head is balanced, serene and still. This means that, at the center, all is still.

In Closing

At the center... all is still... a stillpoint. May you find your center and may you return with it to the world, brimming with appreciation of your highest potential, only to share your Self again and again, with those of us who work with you within a greater cause.

* The Stillpoint Project is active in modern consciousness research and thus we embrace the world's body of spiritual thought, compassionate understanding, and appreciation for the human condition.
