Introduction

The Birth of the Stillpoint Project

After decades of sitting on the back porch waxing on over good ideas, one hour at a community hall lecture proved to be the punch needed to launch the birth of the Stillpoint Project. Dr. Larry Dossey, author of Healing Words and Reinventing Medicine, we thank you.

The Emperor

Dr. Dossey's presentation included a slide show of photographs of the magnificent Emperor Penguin. The largest of penguins, the Emperor stands waist high to a man and weighs between 20 and 45 kg, (up to 100 pounds). Their colonies are found on the 5,000,000 square miles of sea ice known as the Antarctic where temperatures hover as low as -60°C and winds reach velocities of up to 180 kph. One particularly touching shot showed this elegant creature... a black cap and long blue-grey neck, orange ear patches and a yellow breast... as it extended a wing in loving-arm-fashion over a fuzzy, delicate little chick.

Surviving Severe Conditions

Of particular interest is the Emperor Penguin's means of survival in what are known as some of the most severe conditions on the planet and, what those means of survival have to teach us. Dr. Dossey showed images of them huddling together in large circular gatherings that moved across the ice. The birds at the center of the scrum were issued outward by others from the edges in a slowly circling whirlpool. Inside these huddles the ambient conditions are as warm as 20°C.

A Turf War

Dr. Dossey draws a parallel between the penguins on the outside of the circle to those persons in the realm of new thought, particularly in the world of medicine; people who are willing to withstand the challenging conditions on the rim of society's capacity for positive change. For those of you who are not yet aware of the harshness of this climate, let it be enough to say, a turf war is waging over who shall rule the fate of the increasing numbers of ill.
