About The Stillpoint Center for the Healing Arts helping you to help yourself (since 1968) About Us: Mission Statement "Success, like happiness, cannot be pursued. It must ensue. And it only does so as the unintended side effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself." — Victor Frankl The Earth is ill, because her people are. People are ill, because the Earth is. To heal one, is to heal the other. With an educational focus and an interest in ecological welfare, the Stillpoint Center for the healing arts is dedicated to the exploration, mastery and promotion of healing modalities, both ancient and modern. Our philosophy is Osteopathic. Osteopathy Osteopathic medicine is a diagnostic and therapeutic system based on the premise that the primary role of the physician is to facilitate the body's inherent ability to heal itself. Osteopathic principles are grounded in the theory that biological systems (such as the human body) are naturally harmonious and whole; not a collection of separate parts. This understanding is applied to the treatment and healing of the entire person, rather than responding only to their symptoms in a crisis-oriented, one-spot approach. Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. (1828-1917) The founder of Osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., was known as a medical maverick. Disheartened over the orthodox practices of his time, and particularly shocked at the mutilating surgeries he witnessed during his volunteer work as an army surgeon, he set out to discover a better way to treat disease. But it was the 1864 meningitis epidemic, claiming the life of three of his own children, that moved him to "fully realize the inefficacy of drugs... (and the) gross ignorance on the part of the medical profession". Steeled with determination, the following ten years of his life were spent delving into medical books and experimenting with the human anatomy. His work produced three basic principles: the body is capable of making its own remedies, health depends on the structural integrity of the muscle skeletal system and, a perverted structure causes disease. He also promoted sanitation and hygiene, and spoke strongly of the hazards of toxic drugs. Ultimately, it was his "magical" manual manipulation that produced the most renowned and remarkable results. For example, twenty one million people died in the flu epidemic of 1917-18. It is recorded in literature that while American hospitals reported a 30 to 40 percent mortality rate, he lost less than one percent of his patients. Dr. Still came to regard himself as a mechanic of the living body and with his discoveries a new medical science was born. Osteopathy is now defined as a comprehensive system of diagnosis and therapy, based on the interrelationship of anatomy and physiology for the study, prevention, and treatment of disease. Osteopaths view their patients as unique and integrated beings whose condition involves both an internal, as well as an external climate. Extensive training in the use of palpation enables them to access tactile awareness both to diagnose and treat. Basically, they do so by isolating into minute movements of joints and soft tissue to determine which areas are stuck and to which direction they are resistant. Then, utilizing a variety of manipulation techniques, they gently initiate movement back into the restricted area. The intention is to encourage normal range of motion and thereby restore balanced function to the overall muscle-skeletal system. It is believed that this normal movement strengthens the cellular circulation needed to cleanse and nourish the body's tissues. Both the U.S. federal government and the American Medical Association recognize the DO (Diplomate in Osteopathy) as equivalent to the medical doctor. Osteopathic medicine has become one of the fastest growing health professions in the world. Recent Discoveries The Stillpoint Center for the Healing Arts has been investigating the combination of biological medicines with Osteopathic therapy. These combinations increase the body's healing potential and have shown impressive results. Remedies are available through our retail department. Helping you to help yourself Education, therapy and guidance is needed to enable the individual to go forward with confidence in the care of their own health.
